Malena is a daughter of Hector Alterio Onorato and Angela Bacaicoa Destéfano. Her father was an actor and her mother was a psychologist. Her brother Ernesto Alterio is also a notable actor and both siblings are making their name in Spanish-speaking entertainment. Her grandparents were from Italy. In 1974 her family settled in Spain when her father was threatened by Triple A ( (Argentine Anti-Communist Alliance).

She did not follow any formal traditional school education track and did not have any information about education. Although she went to Cristina Rota’s School of Dramatic Arts in Madrid for four years. She also attend classes for the dance, singing and flute.

Malena comes on screen for the first time in the comedy movie El Palo (2001). In this movie she played the role of Pecho-lata, a marginal thief.

She continuously appear in many films like Torremolinos 73 (2003), Días de fútbol (2003) Las voces de la noche (2004), Al final del camino (2009), Cinco metroscuadros (2010), awarded with five Biznagas de oro at the XIV Málaga Film Festival or Bajo el mismo techo (2019).
