Brooklyn , New York, United States is the place where Bernie Sanders was born on September 8, 1941.

Family:

Bernie Sanders comes from London, England by Elias Ben Yehuda Sanders (a Polish survivor of the Holocaust) and Dorothy Glassberg Sanders (an American Jew). He is younger than his brother Larry who was a British-American academic, politician and former spokesperson for Health and Social Care of Green Party of England and Wales. His family lived modestly which shaped his view on economic and social justice. His parents were ardent supporters of the New Deal as well as Franklin D. Roosevelt’s social democratic policies.

Training:

At P.S. 197 he played basketball on the team that won district championships. In the evenings he attended Hebrew school, after which in 1954 he celebrated his bar mitzvah. Subsequently, he was captain of the basketball team at James Madison High School in Brooklyn and attended Brooklyn College for one year before enrolling at University of Chicago where he graduated with a B.A in political science in 1964.

During this time period, he joined Young Socialist League (the youth branch of Socialist Party of America), became active in civil rights movements serving as a student organizer for Congress Of Racial Equality and Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee.

The beginning:

After graduating college, Vermont attracted him because it had rural surroundings and offered an opportunity to participate in local politics. While there are various jobs that included writing and film making that occuppied his time; initially running as an independent candidate both for United States Senate seat or Governorship of Vermont were fruitless efforts on his part. During these years, he developed his discourse on economic and social inequality, which would become a cornerstone of his career.

Political Career of Bernie Sanders:

A case has to be made about the political career of Bernie Sanders. It was in 1981 that he opted for an independent mayoral race in Burlington, Vermont, which saw him defeat both Democratic and Republican candidates. At one point, he served as a mayor supporting innovative rent control laws and investing in public infrastructure. Moreover, his rule was marked by the promotion of worker cooperatives and a strong local economy (Angus). This is the time when he earned himself a reputation as an independent leader who is pragmatic.

United States Senate:

In 2006, he became Senator from Vermont for the first time. He started serving as Senator from Vermont in 2007. In 2012, he was re-elected with seventy-one percent of the vote; four years later, this number decreased slightly to sixty-seven percent.

He announced his bid for another term in the U.S. Senate on May 6, 2024 saying “This country and our democracy are at stake right now.” because it is “a difficult moment” around America and worldwide.

2016 Presidential Campaign:

After declaring his intention to run for President of America under democrats’ banner in 2015 although he had always called himself a democrat socialist all along. His campaign agenda emphasized issues such as wealth inequality victims’ plight, affordable healthcare systems reforms ,properly funded education schemes and cleansing politics among others (“Bernie Sanders” ). Even though Bernie could not get nominated finally but his words struck chord with many Americans especially young adults were concerned thus making him bring progressive elements into national discourse.

2020 Presidential Campaign:

Sanders ran again in 2020 on a similar platform that included more emphasis on Green New Deal regarding climate justice (Wikipedia Contributors). Despite making significant early gains during those primaries Sanders did not clinch the democratic nomination this time round. However, it remained an influential activism that shaped policy positions within Democrats as well as other left-leaning parties and candidates in America.

Private life:

He was previously married to Deborah Shiling from 1964 and divorced with her in 1966. His girlfriend Susan Campbell Mott gave birth to his only biological son, Levi Sanders, in 1969.

The political career of Bernie is closely knit with that of Jane O’Meara Driscoll who he married in 1988. She would partner in his campaigns and activities; they had a daughter together – Carmen – but she also brought two kids into their marriage. With regard to politics, he has authored some books regarding politics in the US.

Summary

He is a US politician and activist with an extended history of public service and who contested the presidency in 2016 and 2020. He has been the most vocal supporter of causes such as income equality, healthcare system overhaul, and environmental protection. Consequently, he is the longest-serving senator from Vermont and has served longer as an independent in Congress than anyone else.
