Anthony Albanese, the younger of two sons, was born in Sydney, Australia on March 2, 1963.
Family:
His mother Maryanne Ellery was an Australian with Irish roots and his father Carlo Albanese was an Italian. Anthony’s relatives brought him up because he believed that his father had died before he was born. However, in 2009, after finding him through the Australian embassy in Italy; he learned that his father was alive and met him for the first time. He also realized then that he had two half-brothers.
Albanese grew up with his mother and maternal grandparents in Sydney City Council public housing located at Camperdown in Inner West. In 1970, his granddad passed away which made it easier for her mother to marry James Williamson the next year. The woman took her stepfather’s surname which lasted only ten weeks as Williamson became a violent drunkard.
Although she suffered from chronic rheumatoid arthritis , Alba’s mom worked part-time as a cleaner since their family subsisted on her grandmother's retirement pension and disability benefits for herself.
Educational background:
He attended St Joseph's Primary School , a Catholic school in Camperdown where he received his primary education and later went to St Mary's Cathedral College also situated in Sydney. His Catholic upbringing was furthered by his mother and based on his social conscience dealing with those in need. Later on, during tertiary level education at University of Sydney , Alba studied Economics and Politics . It is during this period that he developed an interest in politics and started engaging actively with other students through various political activities as well as social movements.
Anthony Albanese,s Career:
He worked for different politicians of the Labor Party before taking up senior positions in national politics. His career began in 1989 when he became an aide to Tom Uren, then Minister of Housing and Works.
In 1996, he was elected to the House of Representatives in Australia for the Grayndler seat within Sydney’s working class west. Since then, he has been seen as an advocate of progressive policy and has dealt with issues such as affordable accommodation, public transport, and welfare reform.
After this, he held several senior positions in the Australian Government such as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Transport and Infrastructure under Julia Gillard and Kevin Rudd . In these capacities ,he oversaw major infrastructure projects including the National Broadband Plan among other things which is one of the most ambitious technology undertakings ever made by any country.
Prime Minister of Australia:
The Labor Party led by Anthony Albanese won over responsible Liberal–National Coalition in the 21 May 2022 election. Though the primary vote decreased, labor had a two-party preference share of +3.66% meaning they became the party with majority seats in parliament. While it wasn’t clear at first whether Labor would have a majority or not, it quickly became apparent that no other political group could form a workable government.
On May 23rd , 2022 , Anthony Albanese was sworn in as Prime Minister of Australia thus becoming the first Italo-Australian prime minister . During his campaign , he promised to tackle issues like climate change , gender equality , public health and improving living conditions for the working class . He committed himself to increasing investments in renewable energy sources as well as reducing carbon emissions through policies which represent a sharp divergence from previous approaches.
Private life:
Albanese tied the knot with Carmel Tebbutt, who had a career in politics as well, thanks to her services as Deputy Premier of New South Wales. They were blessed with only one son: Nathan Albanese . This was in 2019.
In 2020 he started dating Jodie Haydon. Albanese announced his engagement to Haydon in February 2024.
Anthony Albanese is a rugby fan and a music fanatic. He particularly follows rock music closely and has been spotted attending concerts on many occasions. At charity events, he has worked as DJ and also his love towards iconic bands like Midnight Oil.
