She is the daughter of Shirley Katherine Ashley and Arnett Grant Bening. Her mother was a church singer and her father was an insurance salesman and sales training consultant. Annette's parents belonged to Iowa. She had younger sisters, Jane, Dradley and Byron. She claimed German and English ancestry. Her family moved to Wichita, Kansas when she was only 1 year old, and later they moved to San Diego, California.

Education of Annette:

She went to Patrick Henry High School in San Diego and graduated in 1975 in the field of drama. Later, she worked as a cook on a boat for a year. Annette then attended San Diego Mesa College and got her degree in Theater Arts from San Francisco State University.

Debut in Acting:

During high school, Annette made her debut by playing the lead role in The Sound of Music. In 1980, she joined the Colorado Shakespeare Festival and took the role of Lady Macbeth in the Theater of the American Conservatory.

In 1987, Annette made her Broadway debut in Coastal Disturbance and this role earned her a Tony nomination for Featured Actress in a Play.

She broke out as the lead in Hedda Gabler at the Geffen Playhouse in 1999 and returned to Broadway in Arthur Miller's All My Sons in 2019, receiving another Tony nomination for Best Actress in a Play.

She appeared on the screen in the film The Grifters (1990). Her performance in this film earned a nomination as Best Supporting Actress in the Academy Award. Next year, she played an important role in The Virginia Hill, a film directed by Barry Levinson. Annette Bening consistently appeared on-screen in many films. Some of her notable roles in films are Postcards from the Edge (1990), Richard III (1995), The American President (1995), 20th Century Women (2016), Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool (2017), The Seagull (2018), The Report (2019), Captain Marvel (2019), and Death on the Nile (2022).

Annette played the long-distance swimmer role of Diana Nyad in the film Nyad during 2022. This film was distributed by Netflix and premiered two times on screen. First, in September 2023 during the 50th Telluride Film Festival and 2nd time on September 12, 2023, during the 48th Toronto International Film Festival. Her role in this film earned her a nomination at the 96th Academy Awards as Best Actress.
